Hydrant servicing
#1
I have a client that has a site, which is an old RAF base. There are a number of hydrant points around the site. What are the compliance requirements for testing and servicing ?

Are there any I wonder?

I thought usually the fire brigade check them when they are bored..... open them up and fill  somebodies swimming pool up and job done!! Maybe put a meter to measure flow rate if you are lucky

BS9990 refers to UK underground hydrants - if that is what is installed here at his site?.

Often airbases have non standard hydrants and some RAF stations would have been former US Air Force bases so have all manner of American pillar hydrants

Have a look here re the test and responsibilities

A private hydrant installed under building regulations (or older equivalents such as a local act) for fire service use because the public hydrant network is too far from the building(s) does require maintenance under the Fire Safety Order, BS9990 being the current benchmark for a suitable scheme of maintenance.

Some private hydrants over and above the distance requirements, provided on some older sites back in the days of works fire brigades, don't have as clear cut a requirement. Usually we ask the duty holder to consult the FRS - sometimes they state they have them on their system and would need them, on the odd occasion they will say they wouldn't use them and have planned water supplies without them so they can be withdrawn from use.

If in doubt, maintain them unless evidenced otherwise.
