Pricing an installaion, cable amount
#1
When quoting a large fire alarm installation (or small/medium come to that), how do people calculate the quantity of cable? Work it out exactly to the metre, take a guestimate, or have a set amount per device (say 15mts, so 100 devices would automatically calculate at 1.5kms)?

Naturally a fair amount of cable can be wasted as suspended ceilings etc can dictate where the device needs to go, so the installation engineer for the first fix may leave masses of cables on a coil, only to be cut off and be binned when the device is fitted.

If X metres per device, how many?

Normally use scale for estimated loop directions on big sites or from experience an educated guess at small systems.

Good old scaled rule or CAD to work it out - im never usually far off

Depends on the build. I've been doing a lot of apartment build quotes recently so use the 20m rule per point, however I will try and measure it out on awkward builds. Where the route isn't so obvious.

Best guess !

Look at the drawing take an average between a few devices, double it for mucking about and generally speaking arrive at circa 10 - 12m per device plus a run back to the panel ............... then take the rough with the smooth!

I always use 15mtrs per head plus an extra 4 mtrs per panel and if I need to trim my prices I cut it to 12mtrs per head rarely had quote turned down on that

Dont forget drops to MCP or Sounders, etc on large buildings, such as warehouses.... Heard a few stories from contractors getting their fingers burnt for forgetting those....
