Grenfell Report
#1
If you’re struggling to sleep over Christmas I’ve attached the Hackitt report.

The Government yesterday signed off that all 53 Recommendations will be implemented.

For us, the main ones are;
Competency- ECS Gold Card, NVQ Level 3 or an Apprenticeship
Risk Assessments to be done annually, recommendations following that to be completed by a competent person
‘Golden Thread’ for building design. Design contractors to be involved in projects from the early stage and be accountable
Maintenance- Seems like there’s going to be something similar to the Car MOT where there’s a system for all duty holders to upload documentation

It seems like it’s all going to be much more stringent and people will be held to account.

Designers - does this finally mean - know fck all consultants and Architects who try to design fire systems are accountable?

Get shot of Contractor Design when the Consultant has already been paid for their design and expect us to take the flack
All posts are of my own opinion and knowledge and do not reflect the views of the Company I work for.

I have no problem designing a system, the only problem is competing against companies or persons who haven't got a bloody clue.

This is a big gripe of mine, having to do a design on the fly just to facilitate the request for a ‘quote’.
I’ve lost out on two or three jobs this year due to doing the quote without a formal spec to price from. One was for a site I look after for an FM company who wanted prices for an upgrade. My price was for a full new install on Cat L3 system. I lost out to a company who reused and chopped about the 25 year old conventional infrastructure - no wonder my quote was “so much more”. When I went back to do the first maintenance after completion, guess what...? Detection nowhere near L3, but all signed off....
